Thought I wish to share an experience of mine. I am aiming to restore a battery. This is not your normal battery, in that it has supplied excellent day-to-day service in 2 different cars for approx 13 yrs overall! I know what you're thinking however this is definitely true.
I discovered it while rumaging through a trashed 3rd gen camaro in hopes of finding some coordinating parts for my firebird (how to recondition a dead battery). I discovered the date scribbled on the windshield that the vehicle was taken to the junkyard, Then I discovered that the battery placard date was only 2 months prior and the date I was taking a look at the vehicle was an additional month later on than the automobile was put in the junkyard.
I asked the cashier at the junkyard just how much for the battery, he looked at me like I was crazy, told me: We recycle batteries because we are required to, we do not sell them because we feel they are more than likely not recoverable. But your invited to have it - recondition car battery for sale. So I took it home, examined the water and it was great.
I hooked it up to my charger set it on 40 amps for 45 minutes ran it, Let it cool off ran 2 more 45 min cycles (how to restore a car battery). The ammeter showed 30 amp draw on the first cycle then slowly boiled down to about 10 amp draw on the 3rd cycle.
Automobile started up perfectly, this remained in the summertime of 99, Ok I drove the automobile daily up until the summer of 07 with this battery in it, Every year at the end of the summertime I examine the battery water level (if they aren't sealed) of all 3 or 4 vehicles and leading the cells off, then do 3- 45 min 40 amp setting charge cycles, this is because it gets HOT in NC and unsealed batteries do lose water.
Ok I'm quite cautious about not leaving my lights on but it did occur a couple of times while I was at work, however the cars and truck still cranked after 8hrs on - automotive battery reconditioning. Quick foward to 2007, I purchased a 86 Fiero SE parked the firebird and moved the battery to the Fiero.
We drive our Pioneer to the beach, 3 days later on we come back and the next day I hope into the Fiero to go to work and automobile does not crank. Then I took a look at the light switch and it remains in the on position (recondition a car battery). OOPs! Drove our Probe to work, Got house checked the Fiero battery included a cup loaded with tap water, put it on the battery charger 200 amp setting for 2 mins, then 45 minutes on 40 amps (recondition old battery).
Drove it for 2 more wks no problem then the 11th day after work it barely cranked. Put it on the dependable battery charger for 3 more 45 minutes 40 amp cycles and drove it to work then it would not crank after work. I called AAA and they leapt it to get me home.
Is is possible to be in love with a battery lol. I do have the battery that was in the Fiero originally in my garage and I charged it and it took a charge but I'm waiting to see if it holds over the weekend. PS the junkyard battery still reads 10.
